Chapter 43

Lucas

Fuck! Besides Brandon and the left behind junk from another life, there was nothing in this room to even give a clue of what time it was, how long we had been there, or how long we had been out—hours or maybe even days. Judging by my stomach, I went for a couple of days.

The wooden chair dug into my back, and I raised my eyes to examine the room. An old mattress in one corner, discarded cans of beer in another—it was clear this place had been abandoned long ago. A cloud of dust hung in the air, illuminated by a few stray rays of light that found their way through a cracked window. The ticking of a broken clock filled the silence, and time seemed to have no meaning here.

I shook my arms, trying to get some sensation back into them, but I could barely move. Anger rose up from within me as I wondered who could be responsible for this—who would do something like this? What if this was it? What if this dump ended up being my final resting place? Amaya’s face flashed before my eyes, and a wave of fear engulfed me. What if she had to suffer the same fate as Will? No! Not her. Anything but that. I vowed then and there that I would do anything to get out…and make sure she wouldn’t end up like him.

Damn! That means I would get taken out just like Will. That is not what I wanted for her—to have to go through that shit again!

I had realized earlier that this had to be a garage, and the door was jammed shut with what looked like an industrial-sized chain. A layer of dust coated everything in sight, including Brandon who was slumped against the wall, his long legs splayed out in front of him. His stringy dreadlocks stuck to his face from the sweat dripping down, and he struggled to keep his eyes open. “Luc?” he moaned. “Dawg, I can’t feel my feet.” Taking a cue from him, I wriggled my toes, relieved that they still worked. “We’re gonna get out of this, man. Just let me think.”

The only other door in the room was a big metal one that had to be locked from the other side. My eyes searched the garbage strewn around us, looking for something sharp or jagged to cut through our duct tape restraints. With every passing second, my heart pounded faster and faster as I hoped desperately for anything useful to present itself - but nothing did.

Suddenly the loud sound of footsteps echoed behind the metal door, and my body tensed up in anticipation. Who would come through that door? Was it an enemy or a friend? There was only one way to find out. The bolts in the door screeched as metal carelessly glided across each other before it opened with a clang. Four men stepped into the room, all fully strapped with handguns and cold expressions on their faces.
